University of Tartu

Tartu Ülikool (University of Tartu) is Estonia’s oldest and largest university, serving as the country’s academic and research center for nearly four centuries. Ranked among the top 350 universities worldwide, it is home to more than 15,000 students and 3,700 staff who contribute to a wide range of scientific and clinical fields.

Within IMPROVE PRETERM, the University of Tartu brings expertise in neonatology, child psychology, and long-term follow-up research. The Department of Pediatrics at the Institute of Clinical Medicine has more than a decade of experience in international collaborative studies on very preterm infants, participating in major European projects such as EPICE, SHIPS, and RECAP. These efforts have centered on three national cohorts of very preterm infants in Estonia.

In IMPROVE PRETERM, the University of Tartu contributes across several workstreams, with a strong focus on developing and validating follow-up tools for children aged 5 to 7 years. The team also collaborates on the RECAP data platform to assess health, development, and quality of life across childhood and adulthood, helping to build comprehensive, population-based evidence to improve outcomes for individuals born very preterm.
